Hello!
I am Sharon Benson. Candidate for Mesa Public School Board​.
My Story
I've been an Arizona resident for over 50 years. I've been to over 20 school board meetings in the past two years because I am very concerned about the education of our children. My granddaughter is a current MPS student, my children graduated from MPS, and I am a graduate of Westwood High School. I am currently teaching for my eleventh year for MPS in the gifted and talented program, after teaching for Apache Junction schools and being a stay-at-home mom. I have volunteered in MPS classrooms, assisted teachers at home, been the PTO President for my children's school, headed up a booster club, and currently support the Dobson Junior Varsity Basketball program in any way possible. I've always been active in my church, using my skills to teach in the children's programming, and volunteering in Vacation Bible Studies.

Challenging students to develop their ability to use logic and reason to deepen their knowledge is a critical component of my position. Standing in front of the MPS school board has given me an opportunity to respectfully challenge the board when policies are discussed that may not be in the best interest of our students. As a teacher, I am actively participating in the learning process on a daily basis, and I am witness to both positive and negative board policy decisions.
I am a wife, mother of four, and grandmother to one. Faith, Family, and love of the ideals this country was founded upon help to define my priorities. I believe in freedom, personal responsibility, and equality of opportunity for all. As a lifelong learner, I am forever digging into a variety of topics to either deepen my understanding or broaden my knowledge.

My husband and I are small business owners, successfully running an air conditioning company for over 20 years. As a small business owner, I know the importance of fiscal responsibility and using resources wisely. Before entering education, I worked in the banking industry for just over 10 years, ending my tenure as a supervisor. As a fiscal conservative, I believe schools need to use their money more wisely.
I am passionate about education as I know it is the foundation needed for every child to reach their individual potential, and achieve success on whatever path their gifts, talents, and abilities take them. Having dedicated highly qualified teachers in the classroom is essential to providing the excellent learning environment each student in MPS deserves.

My life experiences have provided me with a variety of skills, abilities, and perspectives that make me uniquely qualified to serve on the MPS School Board. My passion for educating students makes me the ideal advocate for every Mesa Public School student from the young in the early days of childhood to those about to venture into adulthood. I'd like to serve you and your children, as your representative on the MPS School Board.
